Volunteer nurses work with the Sherbourne Health Centre Health Bus program to deliver primary health care and health education to homeless and underhoused people throughout Toronto.
Who are they?
Our nurse volunteers – over 60 – are registered, licensed nurses who have at least two years nursing experience. They offer varied experience from ambulatory care in hospitals to work in community health care agencies.
Why do they do what they do?
Nurses volunteer their time because they want to make a difference in the lives of those who face barriers to care. Many have full-time nursing jobs, yet find time to devote to the Sherbourne Health Bus program – year in and year out. As frontline workers, they bear witness to the stories of people who often live with great suffering, bringing compassion and understanding to the work they do.
What services do they provide on the Health Bus?
Nurse volunteers and program staff provide nursing care, which includes:
Hands-on nursing care
Foot and wound care
Health promotion supplies – including free vitamins, hygiene products and warm socks
Referrals to Sherbourne Health Centre and other community health organizations
Health education and emotional support

Volunteer commitment
We ask volunteers to commit to a two-hour shift every three weeks, in addition to training workshops and information meetings held every other month.
