Volunteer nurses provide care largely to individuals and families who reflect Sherbourne Health Centre’s major client groups:
Newcomers to Canada
LGBT people
Homeless and underhoused individuals
People living in poverty
Individuals who suffer mental health/substance use issues
Volunteer nurses must adhere to principles of harm reduction and an anti-oppression framework in keeping with Sherbourne Health Centre’s mission, vision and values. Nurses working on the Sherbourne Rotary Club of Toronto Health Buses must have two years nursing experience.
Nurses on the Sherbourne Health Buses perform on-the-spot nursing care including providing over-the-counter medication. In addition, nurses may provide clients with health promotion information on HIV/AIDS, STIs, diabetes and the safe use of illicit substances.
Experience with community services is an asset, as many clients require appropriate referral for further care.
